However, only about one in two consumers could be considered a heavy user of electronic banking.     This paper was commissioned for Inclusion in Asset Building: Research and Policy Symposium, an event hosted in September 2000 by the Center for Social Development at Washington University in St. Louis. The paper presents results from an analysis using data from the 1998 Survey of Consumer Finances to explore several aspects of the financial relationships of low-income households. The analyses looked at an updated profile of low-income and poor households, their financial portfolios, their attachment to the mainstream financial sector, and their use of various types of financial institutions. The findings suggest ways to move low-income households into the financial mainstream and ways to make financial institutions more attractive to these low-income customers

    U.S. consumers and electronic banking, 1995-2003

    The availability and variety of electronic banking technologies in the marketplace has greatly expanded in recent years. For financial institutions, e-banking technologies can speed processing, reduce costs, and help attract and retain customers. For consumers, they can save time and money and may be more convenient than more traditional ways of banking. This article draws on data from two nationwide surveys to look at consumer use of such products and services as debit cards, pre-authorized debits, and computer banking, particularly as use relates to consumer demographic characteristics and consumer perceptions. ; The data show a consistent increase in the proportion of consumers using a variety of e-banking technologies. Consumer attitudes toward e-banking generally have become more positive over time, with more consumers seeing e-banking as convenient, familiar, easy to use, and secure. The use of some technologies, particularly debit cards, has become more democratized over time, but it is still the case that most e-banking technologies tend to be used by higher income, higher asset, younger, and better educated households. ; E-banking technologies hold the promise of helping families manage their money, pay their bills on time, and avoid overextending themselves with credit. To take full advantage of them, however, consumers need to become aware of the evolving array of e-banking technologies available to them and understand how different technologies fit with their financial management needs.     A Cross-Country Analysis of Unbanked Within the OECD

    Financial inclusion has been extensively researched on a nation-by-nation basis. The recently released Global Findex data set from the World Bank allows for this literature to be extended because it creates universal measures of relevant data. Because data are universal, it allows multiple nations to be analyzed simultaneously. Using a set of thirty-one countries from the OECD, we find that social factors are an important part of highly banked populations. Higher levels of trust in government and formal financial institutions increase the level of financial inclusion. Increases in income inequality are predicted to decrease the banked population within a nation. Our results suggest that in OECD nations the consideration of non-financial factors yields important insight into the determinants of financial inclusion

    Do You Know What You Owe? Students\u27 Understanding of Their Student Loans

    Using a data set that augments a student survey with administrative data from the Iowa State University Office of Financial Aid, the authors posed two questions: Do students know whether they have student loans? Do students know how much they owe on outstanding student loans? We used logistic and ordered logit regressions to answer these questions. Results suggest that although the majority of students are aware that they owe on student loans, many underestimate the amount they owe. One eighth of students in the current study reported no student debt when, in fact, they had a loan. Over a quarter of the students underestimated the amount they owed by less than 10,000,andnearlyonetenthofstudentsunderestimatedtheamountthattheyowedbymorethan10,000, and nearly one tenth of students underestimated the amount that they owed by more than 10,000. This study applies a pension acceptance model to acceptance of an early retirement pension bonus; probabilities of acceptance range from.18 to.33. It also simulates acceptance behavior without the bonus, with probabilities of acceptance ranging from.11 to.30.

    Get the Goods, Not the Garbage - Waste Reduction Education for Limited Resource Families

    Get the Goods was developed to be incorporated into nutrition education programs, specifically the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) of the Cooperative Extension System. In EFNEP, low income families have the opportunity to learn about nutrition and food resource management in one-on-one and small group settings. Paraprofessional teaching assistants assess the needs of learners and develop and deliver lessons based on these needs.Extension Service, USD
